Essie (Meaning: Star)

Hello!

The name of which I am going to blog about today is the name of one of my ancestors. Elsie Eliza "Essie" Pitts (Bountiful Oath of God's Hollow, Star) was born in Lander Wyoming in 1894... or 1896, or any year between the two. Rather confusing, yes? Essie, as she was nicknamed, is my  mysterious great-great grandmother. My family have been trying to crack the case of her burial site for quite a while now, and I have a mild interest in the subject. I have started looking through newspapers for her family. It has given me a little window into her life.

Essie grew up in Lander, WY with her father Elijah (Meaning: My God is Yahweh), mother Jennie (Meaning: God is gracious), and sisters Myrtle (Meaning: Flowering Shrub) and Carrie (Meaning: Manly). She had an interesting young life. Her father was at first a sheepherder, then found gold on property that he inherited from a friend. But, as she grew older, Essie's life took a turn for the worst. Essie's sister and mother were shot at by their father when she was thirteen. Her father went to jail, and her mother divorced him. Essie married a man by the name of Jessie Mortimore (Meaning: Wealthy Dead Sea). They were married for around ten years, and had several children together, my great grandmother Genevieve (Meaning: Of the Race of Woman), her brother Dan (Meaning: He is Judged), and her other brother, David (Meaning: Beloved). Sadly, Essie and Jessie divorced, and Jessie took her children to Yakima WA. I don't know if she willed them to go, but she never saw them again. She married again, to a man named John Lam (Meaning: God's Gentle Grace) and then disappeared.

Essie's life was long and eventful, more interesting than I would have thought. I would never have guessed there was a gold miner in my past! But, even though her story is fascinating, I wonder what Essie thought of her life. I look at it, and it seems like it would have been long and hard. I hope she was happy with her second marriage and when she was laid to rest, wherever that place is, I hope she was satisfied with her life.

Essie's life was like her name. It shone, bright enough for me to see a hundred years after she was born, and inspired me to write about her. That's the power of a name. It's our link to the world, the one thing that will never change. Our name is a brand that the world carries. It's our identity that makes us, us! Our names are perhaps the most precious thing we carry.

Are you named Essie? Do you know someone named Essie? What were the names of your ancestors? If you know of someone named Essie, or are one, let me know about your name below. Essie, you are a star. You keep on shining, like my Essie shined to me from about a hundred years ago. Whether or not it seems this way, you are a beautiful work of art that defines a new meaning for your name. What is that? Tell me below, and let us celebrate together. You and your name are stars in the world, and deserve to be celebrated. Celebrate with me!
